Targeting DNA repair for dementia treatments

To bring together expertise and identify strategies for translation in this emerging field, we formed the DNA repair theme in September 2020. Leading the collective are Group Leaders Prof Vincent Dion (UK DRI at Cardiff) and Dr Gabriel Balmus (UK DRI at Cambridge), who are working to develop ambitious research ideas, coordinate resource sharing and promote cross-centre collaborative schemes through regular, focused meetings and workshops. We spoke to Prof Dion and Dr Balmus to find out more about why DNA repair is an exciting avenue to explore in dementia, what activities are happening in the theme and future plans.

Searching the genome for the next treatments in dementia: in conversation with Dr Emmanouil Metzakopian

As we unpick the underlying causes of neurodegeneration, the emerging picture is getting more complex with the involvement of several players and mechanisms. This offers great opportunity for treatment at different stages of disease, however, there is still a significant challenge in selecting viable components and pathways for drug targeting. We spoke to Dr Emmanouil Metzakopian, Group Leader from UK DRI at Cambridge, who is harnessing and combining the latest genetic technologies to identify these promising candidates, with the ultimate aim of collaborating with industry and developing much-needed treatments for dementia.

Joining the dots of dementia research: In conversation with Professor Caleb Webber

To be successful in drug discovery, researchers must look beyond their own work to the bigger picture, and identify opportunities to set in motion the steps necessary to translate discoveries into treatments. This process can’t be undertaken alone – it necessarily means involving other key partners, including industry, and problem solving in new ways. It can be a daunting task, but is a fundamental step in making our research have real-world impact, especially when facing a challenge like dementia, for which there are currently no disease-modifying treatments. For Professor Caleb Webber, Group Leader at UK DRI at Cardiff, this comes naturally, and the process of meeting, discussing and discovering with others is one of the most enjoyable and rewarding aspects of the job.
