UK DRI endorses ALBA declaration on equity and inclusion

Alba Network

The UK DRI is proud to endorse the new ALBA declaration on equity and inclusion.

Founded by a group of leading scientists, the ALBA Network aims to promote equity and diversity in the brain sciences. The declaration, launched this week and signed by more than 100 major international scientific institutions, is a resource for concrete, positive, evidence-based actions that individuals and organisations at any level can take to promote equity and inclusivity. The network focuses specifically on two contributing factors to perpetual underrepresentation in STEM: implicit bias & workplace culture.

Dr Megan Carey, Chair of the ALBA Declaration Working Group, said:

“The Declaration outlines concrete, evidence based actions that individuals and organisations at any level can take in order to make their environments more equitable and inclusive. It was drafted to be both impactful and broad enough to be widely adopted. We believe that adopting these principles will benefit all members of the research community.”

“It’s enormously important that diversity and inclusivity are at forefront at our thinking at the institute, for the good of our researchers but also for the quality of our science. There is always more we can be doing in this area and I hope that becoming a signatory on this declaration helps us to realise our ambitions.” Prof Bart De Strooper, UK DRI Director

The endorsement follows the establishment of a new diversity thinktank at the UK DRI involving academic representatives from all centres and career stages.
