UK DRI statement on Black Lives Matter

Uk Dri Square Black Small

The shocking events of the past few weeks have drawn into sharp focus the need for global reflection and meaningful change. We strongly condemn all acts of racism, and the mobilisation of so many against it has provided a wake-up call to assess our own actions and drive change for a better institute. Racism takes many forms and we all have a duty to act where we can.

We are under no illusion that we, like so many others in leadership positions in academia and science, stand in a privileged position, having not had to face the barriers that exist for so many. We must use this position for positive change. The problems that exist in our field have a complex history and there is no doubt that we have a long way to go. Considered, sustainable solutions are needed, and we must commit to seeing them through and maintaining momentum in the longer term.

Change begins with education and listening to the views and opinions of those around us. We are now encouraging an open and honest conversation with all our UK DRI colleagues to identify where we need to do better, and to invite suggestions of concrete actions we can take.

Since establishing the UK DRI, we have been overwhelmed by the progress we have made towards our common scientific goal of defeating dementia. This has required a great deal of collective dedication and collaboration. We hope this same spirit can be applied to making us an institute that does its bit to combat racism, that takes this role seriously, and that we are all proud to be a part of.

We look forward to working with our colleagues productively on this issue, and to making a positive difference.
